Benwood Brewing Co.
1907—1912
Benwood Brewing Co. first appears in the 1907 Dun & Bradstreet, but it is not until 1911 that it appears in city directories for the Wheeling area (Mercantile Agency, Sep. 1907; R.L. Polk & Co., 1911). By 1911, it was located at 4839 Eoff Street below 48th Street in Benwood. To put it plainly—Benwood Brewing Company did not do well as a business. That same year, a trustee of the company told newspapers that it would take six years of operation and the sale of 100,000 barrels of beer to repay all the debts incurred by the company (“No Actual,” 1911). After a board meeting in early 1912, the company decided that it would discontinue operations and declare bankruptcy (“Opinion Rendered,” 1912).
