Coca-Cola Bottling Works

1911—1990

The Elkins Coca-Cola Bottling Works does not appear in name in Dun & Bradstreet during the straight-sided era, but its owner—W.S. Ellifrits—does as far back as 1912. According to a survey from the West Virginia Bureau of Labor, W.S. Ellifrits claims the firm opened in 1911 (Daugherty, 1922). They did not incorporate until 1923 (WV Sec. State, n.d.). The 1923 and 1925 Beverage Blue Books list C.D. Ellifrits as the proprietor of the company at that point in time. I presume this was a descendant or spouse of W.S. Ellifrits. Their plant was located at the corner of South Davis Avenue and 11th Street in 1930 (Beverage Journal, 1930), though I am unsure as to whether or not this was the original plant. The company was open until 1990, when its name changed to Diz, Inc. (WV Sec. State, n.d.).

Valley Bottling Works incorporated on March 13, 1908 with a capital of $5,000 and incorporators Joseph A. Pugh, Lee A. Forman, John W. Whittaker, and C.C. Crane (“State House News”, 1908). Dun & Bradstreet records indicate that the business only lasted until 1909 (Mercantile Agency, Sep. 1909), but also existed since 1905—long before their official incorporation.
