Reymann Memorial Farms

1917—Present

The Reymann Memorial Farms were presented by the estate of Lawrence A. Reymann—of the Reymann Brewing Company family—to the West Virginia Experimental Station (see: Morgantown Milks page) of WVU in 1914 (“Reymann Memorial,” 1914). The donation consisted of 934.25 acres on the Capon River, 76 Ayrshire cows, farm machinery, and a cheese factory. The herd of cows was particularly notable, as it was recognized as “[Mr. Reymann’s] life’s work” and was nationally recognized as one of the leading herds of this breed in the United States.

Dr. L.F. Sutton, an assistant professor of horticulture at WVU, was given the position of superintendent at the farm (“Sutton Added,” 1917). This was to continue research at the new experimental station of WVU that the Reymann Memorial Farms became.

The Reymann Memorial Farms continues in animal tending today (“Reymann Memorial,” 2024), with typically around 160 cattle on the farm in any given year.
